I went to the University of Ulster from 1995-1997 2006-2008 and 2009-2010
I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Health Science and a Masters in Health Science as well as lots of professional qualifications
I have worked in hospitals in Northern Ireland as a Clinical Scientist within Cardiology and now work as the Scientific Lead in NHS England and will soon be moving to be the Chief Healthcare Scientist in Scottish Government. So I have had an interesting path in my career.
I am currently the Scientific Lead in NHS England.
I love physics and rock music and talking about science!
I live in Northern Ireland but work in London, so I travel to London alot for my job but also get to work from home.
I have a dog called Shadow who is a big black dog with long hair.
I am a Clinical Scientist have specialised in looking at hearts, and now work in NHS England as the Scientific Lead.
I have worked in a hospital using ultrasound to look inside people and examine their hearts.
You might not know but while everyones heart look kinda the same they are never exactly the same, and each persons heart size is unique to them.
Most peoples hearts are on the left side of their chest but not everyones! So its quite like being a detective when a Doctor has a question about a persons heart and I have to investigate to find out the answer.
I now work in the main NHS in the National Healthcare Science Team as the Scientific Lead.
My Typical Day:
I work 4 long days and no two days are ever the same, I usually start very early and work quite late. I work at my computer alot and attend alot of meetings.
Every day is different so theres no such thing as a typical day. I spend alot of time attending meetings on my computer at the moment, when I am in the office I work in the headquarters of NHS England in a very impressive building called Skipton House in London. I also get to attend alot of meetings with very important people and I also get to travel around England alot to attend and speak at events.
What I'd do with the prize money:
I would like to run an event to showcase the fantastic careers that people can have as a scientist within the NHS.
I would like to run some events which would allow Students to be able to find out the breadth of the careers and bring together scientists and facilitate school tours of NHS sites.
