Every breath we take, we inhale a vast array of bacteria, viruses and fungi and yet we do not get infected every time we breath in. My group aims to understand what prevents symptomatic respiratory infections. This is multi-layered and looks at all levels of the immune response. To answer why we get infected, we have developed a range of models of infection and vaccination

My Typical Day:
I get up and have a shower. I take my daughter to school. I (normally) go into work in London by train. When I am there I start the day by having a cup of tea. I then meet the team of scientists I work with and we plan the day. Sometimes I go into the lab and do an experiment, but mostly I plan future work. After lunch with my team, I might do some more writing or go for a run. I then go home by train. I make supper for my children in the evening. If I am lucky there is some time to play on the Xbox.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I am writing a book about what makes us ill, this will help people to understand infections and the treatments. The book will be much better if it has pictures, but I am terrible at drawing, so I would use the prize to pay artists to make pictures that me and everyone else can use to explain infectious disease.
