The Institute of Cancer Research & Royal Marsden Hospital
I am a researcher at the Institute of Cancer Research. I am working on developing methods for cancer treatment with radiation.
I live in London, and I am originally from Pakistan. I like to cook and watch cooking competition shows. I like to do photography and I am overly analytic of the pictures. I have lots of plants and love to take care of them.
Working on improved cancer treatment with radiation.
One of the many ways to treat cancer is with ‘radiotherapy’ where powerful radiation is bombarded on the tumor to shrink it. Since these radiations are harmful to the normal (non-cancerous) tissues, it is very important to mark the tumor so that radiation does not harm other tissues. In order to find the exact location of the tumor, you need an advanced way to look into the tumour so that the doctor can mark it.
Imagine that you have to color a picture and the teacher asks you not to color outside the lines. If the picture is not of good quality then you will have difficulty staying inside the lines. However, if the picture is clear then it will be easier for you to color the picture. My job is to make these pictures better so that it will help the doctors to deliver the radiation treatment accurately.
My Typical Day:
My daily routine just involves doing my work, cooking, and trying to do a bit of exercise.
I wake up in the morning around 7 and do some exercise (yoga and sometimes running), I make some coffee and enjoy it before starting work. I am working from home due to the pandemic so I start working around 8:30 and read emails and news before officially starting my day. My work includes doing experiments on the computer and analyzing the data and talking to fellow researchers and attending meetings. I work till 5 or 6 and then go for a walk or just talk to my family on a video call. I eat my dinner and watch TV and sometimes I read before going to bed.
