For me the best part is finding something one else knows yet- the data analysis comes together and you see a pattern or a trend and you know you have something interesting. Then you tell people and they check, then you check again just in case, then you publish the findings so other people know what you found. Then, much later, maybe something you found can help someone get better treatment or exercise more or even walk on Mars!
The best part for me is finding things out – you think of something, wonder if it’s the case, then go and design an experiment and find out if it is (it frequently is not). Obviously you have to break that down into smaller bits and take them one at a time, but the combination of coming up with questions about how things work and having the tools and skills to go and find out yourself is really cool.
