At the moment I’m working on data from a bed rest study, and planning a study looking at exercise for pregnant people, and another about high tech socks. One of my workmates also has an astronaut study, which I might need to help with too.
I have 2 main projects on the go at the moment. One is to update a handbook of information about what to do after a large radiation accident. All the things to think about – for example what type of radioactive material is present, how much, how has it spread, how to deal with it, what equipment do you need, what skills do you need, how much will it cost, will it create lots of waste, what can you do with that waste, will your action do more harm to the environment, will people be happy with it – and more. I’m currently looking at how to clean up contaminated drinking water to make sure people don’t get ill.
I’m also looking at how things we might do to protect people from radiation might have other effects. For example of you move lots of people away from their homes then what effect does that have. People can become lonely if separated from friends and family for example.
I am currently working on memory responses following SARS-CoV-2 infections in humans. Most infected people, even with mild symptoms, developed antibodies but after a while the antibody level decreases. However, it does not mean people are not protected. It depends if they developed memory cells and for example memory B cells which have the ability to lead to new antibody responses following a new infection. So we are currently analysing if some people who were infected 6 months ago have some memory cells and are consequently protected from a reinfection.
